spirits

after moving back from germany, i lived back at my parent's house. in the same little room i grew up in. these were my room spirits.

the toy

so here's a peek at calder's room and all his toys. this was taken before he was even born so we've accumulated even more. jeff and i love wooden toys and books. some of our favorite shops are www.mahardrygoods.com, www.brightoctober.com, www.oompatoys.com and if you live in dallas, whole earth provisions on mockingbird lane has a great selection!

mandala

nothing is more relaxing than painting or drawing mandalas. this simple circle shape represents wholeness and is embraced by eastern and some western religions. mom suggested lana and i use them as subject matter a few years back in mendo . i was pretty happy with mine but looking back im not so sure why i used red and green. yikes.

1st grade

this has to be the absolute cutest school picture i have ever seen. and im not being biased just because it is of JB. i have to share with you one of the worst photos of me later this week. you'll see what happens when a tomboy has to put on an itchy dress.

mendocino

my mom teaches a fantastic water soluble oil class every year at the mendocino art center in northern california. these are a few of my warm-ups from last year. i was four months pregnant and hadn't painted in a loooong time.

beat poetry

this is my idea of stream of consciousness

here is a painting i started ages ago and still have not finished. i just can't figure out what it's missing. and im not sure i like the hot pink edge. any suggestions?

smells like

i was an avid sticker collector growing up. my large photo album full of puffy, smelly, shiny and fuzzy stickers was the envy of the 2nd grade. i found these two pages from that exact album a few months ago.

color studies

ironically i spend most of my time creating by hand. in this day and age you would think i would be chained to a computer. im very fortunate to have such a job. :) im a little rusty in photoshop and thought i would do a few excercises in color.

hai!

here are a few more journal entries from my travels a couple of years ago. i fell in love with japan and can't wait to go back with the family. i spent 15 days traveling around japan and korea with my friend eriko. we could only speak german together which was a huge challenge. and she didn't quite understand why i liked to sit and 'people watch' or draw. but she was a wonderful guide.

human behavior

i actually went to school for graphic design, but these days i rarely design in the traditional sense. thought i would share this type treatment of björk's song, human behavior. it was my screensaver for ages back in the days when i worked in illustrator. :)

space odyssey

journal drawings inspired by the unknown.

ami what?

according to wikipedia, amigurumi is "the Japanese art of knitting or crocheting small stuffed animals and anthropomorphic creatures. Amigurumi are typically cute animals (such as bears, rabbits, cats, dogs, etc.), but can include inanimate objects endowed with anthropomorphic features. Amigurumi can be knitted, but the vast majority of amigurumi are crocheted."

check out www.gourmetamigurumi.com to see some of the cutest animals out there.

olga kost

olga's art was handpicked on etsy today. her paintings are so rich and whimsical. i want one! check out the brush strokes, too, if you enlarge the jpg. she is a practicing architect in poland but is originally from russia.
her etsy shop is KrakartOlgaKost.

bee and boo

okay i was going to brag on my über-talented husband today but i wasn't able to get all the jpgs needed for the full "effect!"
instead i bring you our husband-wife icon created by mister barfoot himself. im 'bee' and he is 'boo'. ahhhh.

cuuuuuute clothes for your critter

i want to get calder this long sleeved shirt but am trying to be good. i already have all his winter clothing and it's only august.
you can find them on www.1girl1boy.com or (of course!) on etsy.

super cyanotypes

remember those cyanotypes you did as a kid with leaves and letters and weird stuff? well, i finally figured out the grown-up way with real chemicals. and the color is amazing!!! the first two are actual prints and the second two i want to do very soon.
enjoy!

tonight we took calder to his first baseball game. he loved it! we took a ton of photos which i will post tomorrow. so for my images tonight i chose a couple of small color square paintings. "never be me" is a personal collage that i kept tucked away in a journal. until this evening. sweet dreams.
